Pyxis Biologix is interested in the biological activities of all plant species.  Progress in plant chemistry and biology would not be possible without sensitive biological tests and specific methods for their detection in plant tissues.  We are establishing tests and methods for biological determination.  Plant compounds mainly exist as mixtures, so the combination of HPLC, MS, NMR and ELISA will be utilized to segregate compounds and determine their weight and structure.  Methods of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against suspected biologically active compounds will be developed and used in tests for quantification.  Furthermore, presence of bioactive compounds in unassay plant species will help increase the importance of new raw material found in these plant species and their demand in the market will be increased in the future.

Pyxis Biologix is targeting the dietary supplement market, which is currently valued at $25 billion in the US.  Driven by the increasing pool of middle-aging population with a higher life expectancy, the supplement market is projected to grow at a compounded annual rate of 25%.  Within this market, we are focused on couple lucrative segments:  a safer alternative to energy supplements, which is a $5.4 billion segment that is growing at 55% annually and a more efficient way for amino acid supplement absorbance, which is a $10 billion segment that is growing at 10% annually.  Based on the demand and competitive product offerings, Pyxis Biologix plans to capture $500 million of this market. 

 

In the past 50 years, development of combinatorial chemistry has replaced the "extract elixir" and became the new standard for health maintenance and treatment of ailments.  Additionally, a semi-unregulated dietary supplement industry with poor quality and no expertise left many consumers ill with adverse side effects and/or dissatisfaction.  A significant problem with dietary supplements is poor efficacy (<5%), requiring large amounts over a period of time, with such dosing is potentially enhanced toxicity.   A very small part of the world's biodiversity (<10%) has ever been tested for any biological activity, even less for toxicity.  Plants have evolved through thousands of evolutionary years and are selective biological activators waiting to be discovered.  Therefore, there is an enormous potential for discovery, purification, identification, testing and commercialization of plant compounds.
